Frequently Asked Questions

Your Questions, Answered

  • LARPing and cosplay are similar but they are not the same. LARPing is a performance art, it requires costume, a character, and you to play that character within the realm of the event you are attending. Breaking character is detrimental to the scene in that it can take away from others experience (Kyle, 2018). Cosplaying is a visual art form. Cosplaying requires a costume but not the performance.

  • LARPing can range from being relatively cheap to very expensive. It depends on how much you are willing to spend and how much effort you are willing to put in.

  • Shopping online is a quick and easy way to find all the essentials you'll need for your costume, accessories, weapons, etc.

  • Thrifting is another option that is more time consuming but far cheaper.

  • Weapons and armor can range from a hundred dollars to upwards of five hundred, depending on the quality and brand (Les Artisans d’Azure, 2023).

  • For LARPing events that are over a weekend or longer, camping essentials will be required and that is another cost to factor in (Les Artisans d’Azure, 2023).

  • For beginners you can get away with spending little money and achieve the look you are after.

  • There are many forums online that can connect you to the world of LARPing and get you settled in.

  • There are also many different LARPing events that occur and there are plenty of websites that you can register for the event with.
